Cheilectomy

Cheilectomy is a procedure to debride the first metatarsal phalangeal joint of arthritic changes to the joint. Exostosis, or bone spurs, can form on the dorsal (top) aspect of the joint secondary to compressive, or jamming, forces at that location.

A cheilectomy is a less invasive way to address the spurring then an implant or arthrodesis, because it preserves the integrity of the joint cartilage. However, it usually does not address the cause of the arthritis, which can result in eventual recurrence of the exostosis.
