While many athletes suffer foot and ankle injuries, diabetics are significantly more likely than non-diabetics to sustain a stress fracture or other foot or ankle injury. Because diabetes causes nerve damage, diabetics often have diminished sensation in their extremities. They may not be aware of an injury that swells, reddens, or bruises. They continue exercising and often exacerbate the injury. Complications can arise if an injury goes untreated, particularly because diabetics tend to have poor circulation, which can compromise the healing process and increase the risk of infection. To help prevent serious foot and ankle injuries, diabetic athletes should inspect their feet before and after exercising and select well-cushioned shoes with a deep toe box and adjustable laces.
