When Is It Time For New Orthotics?

Comments (0)

Walking and running are simply two of the best forms of exercise you can do. If you want to take up either of these physical activities and are looking to join a group that provides support and kinship, consider joining the Star City Striders. This organization is committed to healthy lifestyles in the Roanoke Valley and can help you on your journey to improved fitness. Many members will probably also be able to tell you about the value of custom orthotics!

Orthotics can certainly be useful for runners, but these medical devices are an instrumental part of treatment for a wide range of injuries or ailments that might affect you. As with any other physical item, they are not intended to last forever. The materials used to construct them will break down in time, thereby having a negative impact on their ability to perform their intended function.

Since they have a finite shelf-life, how do you know when it is time for new orthotics? Well, your first clue will be in regards to the condition they were prescribed to treat. If you find that old biomechanics or medical issues are cropping back up, then you should come back in for an evaluation. Before you do, though, run through the following checklist:

  • How do they feel while you are standing or moving? Should you feel discomfort or pain, they definitely need to be replaced.
  • How do they look? Take the inserts out of your shoes and evaluate them for wear and tear. If you note any breakage, cracking, or thinness, then it is time for replacements.
  • Are your shoes worn in a normal manner? An effective pair of orthoses will improve your biomechanical processes into an efficient, natural gait. Shoes that have unusual wear patterns—excessive wear on either the inside or outside edges—indicate that things are not working as they should and we need to fix that for you.

No matter what foot or ankle condition you have that would benefit from a custom pair of orthotics, Shenandoah Podiatry will create them for you. When they break down, as is normal, we can craft a new pair for your unique feet. Call us today at (540) 904-1458 for our Roanoke, VA office or (540) 803-4343 for our Blacksburg office. You can also use our online form to request your appointment at either location.
