Compartment Syndrome
Muscles in many parts of the body are enclosed in a compartment that is formed of a tough membrane called fascia. The compartment is filled when muscles become swollen, which causes an interference with nerves and blood vessels. It can also cause damage to the muscles themselves. The result of this is called compartment syndrome. This may be caused by just a one-time traumatic injury such as a fractured bone or overuse such as when running long distances.
